2020 Season Preview - One Last Ride?

So here we are - the 2020 NFL Season is upon us. A season like no other due to the current worldwide pandemic.

The New Orleans Saints have one goal this year and that is to finally end the playoff heartbreak of the last three years and get to the SuperBowl in Tampa next February. Make no mistake about it the Saints are well set to make that jump this year with, on paper, the strongest roster in the NFL. At every position the Saints have at least one elite player and there are no other teams that can say that this year.

Of course, The Saints success rest's on the right arm of future hall of famer Drew Brees, in what might be his last season Brees has promised to 'let it loose' this year and not hold anything back and with the offensive weapons he has at his disposal who can blame him:

  • Michael Thomas - The BEST Wide Receiver in the NFL without any doubt, last year proved it. Ignore the 'he only runs slants' brigade, MT is elite at every aspect and is only going to get better.
  • Emmanuel Sanders - Finally the Saints have a viable number 2 (insert Odell Beckham Joke....) receiver who can take some of the pressure off MT
  • Alvin Kamara - See below.....
  • Jared Cook - I maintain to this day, without that dirty helmet to helmet hit that put him out against the 49ers last season we would have won that game and grabbed the number 1 seed. Cook was really beginning to come into his own after a slow start and this season you will see what he is capable of in this offence
  • Taysom Hill - I love this man and cant wait to see what is being planned for him this year

This doesn't even include the elite offensive line with the best tackle tandem in the league!  If i was a defensive coordinator in the NFL I would be having sleepless nights trying to figure out how to stop this offence.

Alvin Kamara.........It has been a funny off season where I was expecting a hold out to come and it may have done (although Kamara denies this) and was only for two days in August. Regardless of all this he finally signed his extension the day before the season starts. 5 years for $75 million with $34 million guaranteed and a $15 Million signing bonus. That is BIG money for a a running back, however, Kamara is so much more than a running back. You saw at the start of last season before his injury how good he is and he wasn't the same towards the end of 2019. When fit and firing he is unique in the NFL and could be the difference between the Saints making the SuperBowl or not. Yes its a lot of money but you pay it for talent like this.

Onto the defence and as mentioned above, we have elite players at every position:

  • Defensive Line - Cam Jordan
  • Linebacker - DeMario Davis
  • Cornerback - Marshon Lattimore
  • Safety - Marcus Williams

This defence has a chance to be in the top 5 in the league this year. There is depth at all positions except maybe pass rusher (hence the attempt to sign Clowney). Last year no one could run on this defence and the secondary has only got better with the additions of a fully playbook ready Janoris Jenkins and FA signing Malcolm Jenkins. Make no mistake they are going to be tested this year with games against Green Bay, Kansas City and the divisional games but i truly believe we will be top 5 on defence this year.

Even Special teams have elite players, Lutz is in the top 3 kickers in the league, Morstead is still the best punter in the league and Deont'e Harris is electric when he catches kicks and punts.

In case you couldn't tell I am excited about the potential for this team in 2020. Its going to be a weird season with limited fan attendance for the early part of the season but I am high on the Saints changes as evidence by my season prediction of 14-2 and the NUMBER ONE SEED in the NFC.

It all starts tonight at 9.30pm for us in the UK and i cant wait!!!
